The Ancient Fertile Crescent of Mesopotamia Empire and the Present
Comparison and Contrast Essay
Throughout the ancient time there were plenty of beliefs in gods. Two major categories of the beliefs in gods are ‘monotheism’ and ‘polytheism’. The former is an idea of believing in only one god which contrasts to latter that has gods and goddesses. As the number of deities among these two groups differs, the powers of each god also differ. On the other hand the ancient people were somewhat sharing the similar way of worship.
The word monotheism is derived from Greek in which ‘mono’ means single and ‘theos’ means god while the word ‘poly’ means many translated by Rit Nosotro (2010) on hyperhistory.net. Monotheists’ god was totally self-sufficient so he intolerated his people to believe in other gods. For example Israelites, Yahweh was a jealous god who would not permit his people to make idols or follow gods of other nation; in exchange he would take care of them against all other gods. The polytheism was open-minded and easy going approach to a religion belief and practice (Kirsch, 2010). The polytheists could control themselves to follow of believe in as many gods and goddesses as they prefer without and punishment or sin. The Sumerian is one of the groups which believed polytheism, according to their ancient statue of many different gods with different postures living in a peaceful way. The different way the deities of these two groups treated the people, the different beliefs between their believers.
Since there is only one god in monotheism, the god must be able to do or be anything for his people. For example, the Trinity in Christianity in which god is one being in the three eternal persons; the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit (Monotheism, 2010). With one god having all powers in his hand, the monotheists didn’t have to respect others, they believed in a single Powerful God (Nosotro, 2010). The polytheists’ idea was totally in the opposite way. According to Polytheism (redirected from polytheist) (13 September 2010) on encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com, each deity is distinguished by special functions and they could play only their own role. For example, the ancient Persian’s deities: Ahura Mazda was the god of wisdom; Airyaman was the god of friendship and healing; Ahurani the water goddess; etc from tripod.com (n.d.). Thus, there is great difference in the deities’ powers between the monotheism and the polytheism.
Despite the differences there is something in common. Both monotheism and polytheism were worshipping their gods. Every deity was worshipped by unique ways due to his power. According to Alain Danielou (n.d.) on etymonline.com, in the polytheistic religion each individual worshiper chose deity and didn’t usually worship other gods in the same way as his own, as the one he felt nearer to himself, one at a time like monotheists who had only one god. Since they had god to worship and either group had their own gods, they had to worship him in their own way. This paragraph is showing the similarity of monotheism and polytheism in compare.
In conclusion, monotheism and polytheism shared differences and a similarity practice in religions, belief in powers of the deities, and the worship. Since the people experienced all kinds of civilizations, wars and failures. The religions people beliefs are still derived from both types. Also the differences and similarities between two groups are strongly influence the civilization and recession.

Code of Hammurabi
Before the punishment is really cruel than today. And if you compare to Thai law the punishment level is really a big cap. Before if you do something wrong you have no chance to change your future, most of the punishment is you die. Example before “If anyone ensnares another, putting a ban upon him, but he cannot prove it, then he that ensnared him shall be put to death.” (Wikipedia, 2010) But in Thai law you only go to jail. Thai law and Hammurabi code punishment are really different.
Now day laws are worldwide in our world all the country use this laws but the punishment may not be the same exactly but it worldwide. “The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved ancient law code, dating to ca. 1790 BC in ancient Babylon.” (Wikipedia, 2010) It only uses in Babylon not worldwide though Asia or Europe.
The laws today are originally come from the Hammurabi code. It may change a little bit to fit though our world. Example of the law “If anyone strikes the body of a man higher in rank than he, he shall receive sixty blows with an ox-whip in public.”(Wikipedia, 2010) The law may change to be if anyone strikes others people they are put in prison. So it kinds of relate to each other so the origin of our law today come from the Hammurabi code.
In another word, in the past and in modern society, the world had changed a lot. Everything has adapted to get along smoothly with its time. For example, long ago, the laws were used only in small area, but now, the laws are used for the whole country. On the other hand, consequences were changed. Most of the harsh punishments were removed. However, most of the laws in every period of times, its original was from Hammurabi code.

Compare & contrast
In Mesopotamian times, the Sumerians (people who lived in Mesopotamia) had various ways of entertaining themselves. They conducted activities which are related to the activities people do in the present age, they played music and hunted animals. This essay will show the differences in both activities which will be determined by their purpose, popularity and the equipments needed to perform these activities.
Everybody has to have a purpose on doing something, as we know the main purpose of playing music and hunting animals are to entertain people. Playing music had more than one purpose, according to http://ancientmesopotamia.wetpaint.com, 2008, Culture of people. “The songs were written for the gods but many were written to explain important events”. These songs were passed down from generations to generations. On the other hand the purpose of hunting was for the kings to show their ruling monarch and to practice their hunting skills, explained by Mechikoff & Estes, 2010, lion hunting “In ancient Assyria, lion-hunting was considered the sport of kings, symbolic of the ruling monarch’s duty to protect and fight for his people
Playing Music and hunting was popular among the Sumerians, according to http://ancientmesopotamia.wetpaint.com, 2008, Culture of people. “Music and songs made kings and rulers laugh, they were also enjoyed by regular people who liked to sing and dance in their homes or in the marketplaces.” However hunting was usually conducted by the warriors and the Assyria kings. Lion hunting was popular among the kings because it shows how skillful the kings were and that they had the power to rule.
Another noticeable different between Music and hunting is the equipment or instruments people used in order to carry out these activities. Historian had discovered many musical instruments that were used to play music in Mesopotamia. For example the Oud appears many times throughout Mesopotamian history. According to Erica Goode, 2008, A Fabled Instrument, Suppressed in Iraq thrives in Exile, “Construction of the Oud is similar to that of the lute. The back of the instrument is made of thin wood staves glued together on edge. Alternating staves of light and dark wood are often used. The instrument usually has an odd number of staves, the strings were made from metal, and most of the Oud instruments were made out of wood.” Therefore in hunting warriors and kings used more metal to make their equipments and weapons because it is obvious that metal is stronger than wood. Evidences were found that birds were used during hunting too.
It’s clear that Music is more popular and easier too make than hunting. Hunting back then shows that it’s a sport for only high ranked warriors and rulers of the land. Distinctly they both have their own advantages for a specific group of people in the society. In my opinion it’s really up to the luck people had, if they were born as a higher classed or lower classed, but it’s up to them that they enjoyed it or not.

Compare and contrast Hammurabi code with Thai law.
Comparison Hammurabi code with Thai law. Hammurabi code somehow also has similarities in rules. Hammurabi code gets a very different kind of punishment compare to Thai law. Hammurabi code is well known and Thai law isn’t. Overall these two can be said that they’re kind of different.
Rules for both Hammurabi and Thai do have some similarities. For example both of them do anti-stealing. Because of that both of them got the same rule which force or give of a persuasion. The two law Thai, and Hammurabi code both give off a persuasion in to stop stealing or robbing. Both Hammurabi and Thai law do have same or linked rules.
Punishment in Hammurabi code and Thai’s law can be said that they are completely different. For example robbing and stealing. Hammurabi code said to be “If anyone commits a robbery and is caught, he shall be put to death.”Information provided from Wikipedia. Thai law said if anyone rob or steal they shall be put to prison and how long they should be put is depend on what they has steal. From the punishment it can be said they are completely different.
Hammurabi code is a well known law which Thai isn’t. Hammurabi code is a very old law and it is written on clay, rock. Thai law is written on the paper. Somehow Hammurabi code is display on the museum cause of its ancient item and it has a punishment in which extremely surprise people today. Instead Thai law now isn’t ancient because it is still occur now and it isn’t display on the museum. It is to be said that Hammurabi code is way famous, which one of the reason is they are ancient rules but Thai law isn’t.
In conclusion, Hammurabi code and Thai law is kind of different than similar. Hammurabi got some rule which Thai law does have is true. But Hammurabi got a very different and torture punishment than Thai does. Hammurabi code is well known because it is an ancient item in which it law is extremely surprising like “an eye for an eye.” Yet Thai isn’t and it law is still occurred now. Lastly Hammurabi code is a law where differences can be said when it is compare with Thai law.

Self Reflect
No Pain No Gain
The early years of my life was boring, or I’d rather say nothing happened much maybe other people’s life was just boring as mine, who knows? I was eleven years old, I went to a good school, we had a nice house, an expensive car, and my future was a flat route. It felt nice and safe but I knew there was something missing , my life was so normal I wasn’t a brave kid, most the time I always do things people guided me to do, I was always boxed. But something happened it changed my life forever, I learnt the biggest lesson of my life, a lesson which no one could teach me.
During 6th grade summer break, it was boring as usual, I spent most of the time playing "Warcraft 3" and watching cartoons. As I was watching television something catch my attention, it was a commercial about a competition that going to happen. The World Cyber Games competition was going to be held in Singapore soon, there were qualifying rounds for all countries throughout the world including Thailand. I was instantly interested, it was my chance to do something challenging something I had not done before.
After persuading and using repetition to help, my parents finally supported me to compete. It took about an hour as we drove to Sirikit convention center where the qualifying round was held, for me it felt like a day because of all the excitement. As we arrived at the hall, the amount of participants blew my brains off. Most of the participants were at the age of teenagers through mid- life. It made me want to giggle when I see people at the age of thirty and above, still playing video games like seriously guys go get a job! But that didn’t wasted my time I hurried to the registration counter, without doubt I tick the box that had “Warcraft 3” beside it.
Then I explored the hall and saw people practicing “Warcraft 3” as I noticed their skills of gaming were highly remarkable. It made me felt like a little lamp in the wolf’s territory, I lost my confident. I was lucky that my family was supportive, they cheered me up and I felt better. The moment had come. I swept my sight around and noticed that I was the youngest competitor. I walked to the computer feeling scared. But something came in my mind, it was time for me to do something real. I shook hands with my opponent and the match started people gathered around to see. I felt even more anxious but I kept my nerves, we battled fairly but his skills were too powerful to resist, after approximately 5 minutes I was defeated. It had been the last defeat of my life.
Even though I’d lost but the experiences and the moral I gained from losing was irreplaceable, it taught me to be greater and braver than ever. People can defeat me but they could never defeat my spirit it only makes me want to develop more, taking “No” for an answer was better than hearing “Yes” all the time. Nowadays I never have doubt when participating in activities though I know that the chances of winning were small. Practice makes perfect!

The Day of Perplexity
After five minutes of showering, brushing teeth, and changing I went down after grabbing my camera and followed my father leaving my little pretty sister sleeping there on a brown twin bed with two big thick white sheets on top. I went down the stairs well from the forth floor to the first floor in about twenty seconds, running through darken floors to the warehouse’s light breakfast room just in front of the first floor stairs well.
We set out from the hotel as immediate as my left foot touched the ground after hurriedly sprinting down the well. The weather was accommodated for our journey to a bus station about two kilometers away. We walked from our hotel through the midst of people to the underground train approximately twenty meters deep from the brick surface in Paris. Grey bricks represented that the area was the center of the cities or towns and the wider they were the older the cities were. That was what my father told me when I was tripped by a brick while walking across the road to the entrance of the underground train.
From there, my father told me to lead the way so when I have to come to get him at the airport later I would know the way. Since we were exiting Paris after my father’s return from Germany, the place where he was headed in that morning. So I went down through two series of stairs. We inserted a ticket which we bought it several days ago for traveling in Paris for five days. The machine sucked my ticket with a small tap of magnet containing some information which I wouldn’t be able to figure it out. After receiving back my card I went on passing a small swinging door made of plastic. I suddenly saw the two green signs pointing out the path. I turned left with my father following me. We went down again turning right and there a boxy long green train with crowded people in it waiting for us. We ran towards it, but instantaneously the doors of the giant worm closed and set off. We had to wait for three to four minutes for the new one to come. As immediate as the four minutes passed the train came and we jumped in as soon as the doors opened. We were standing for two minutes then quickly ran out because it was so crowded that we couldn’t breathe comfortably. As we came up from the underground holes with giant worms running around we passed through shops and stores selling sweet gorgeous fruits. We finally reached the surface and suddenly looked at the watch on our left hand. We were not on time. My father told me with amazed since we lost so much time in the mole’s holes.
Dragging a bag with my new recharged energy seemed so easy in that morning. I set back to my hotel through the same holes but just different side, from right to left. As soon as I reached the station I was off from. The perplexity started. There were three exits, and each led to the different tunnels and stations. I’ve got to make a quick choice because my mother and sister were sleeping alone, so I had to hurry back. I chose the most left. I rose up in a place where I had never seen before. A place with so many high building addressed people’s work places. I thought to myself, may be this certainly was not the one. So I walked back through the same tunnel. And again there I was standing in front of the three exits which one of them was canceled. Now, I decided to take to second option which was to ask the public information center. Unfortunately, the woman sitting there was so upset with me since I couldn’t speak French. I told her the hotel I was living in, yet it was useless.
So I walked out from there and took the second choice. I went backward and was walking for almost three hundred meters then popped up at a place where I thought I saw once. I started to walk around the place and finally recognized that this was the station next to the one I had be. Though it was visualized from where I stood. I then tried hard to put a compass in my little head remembering the directions and quickly went down through the same tunnel over again. I finalized that, if I could have just turned right for the first time I would be sleeping on a nice fluffy bed hugging my mother by now.

Shining under the night sky, and follow under the sun in the morning.
As now night has turned bright in the morning, a girl sight was shown up with a building. She enters that building where she saw many groups of people moving around with charisma. As the girl enters the tiny room, her reflection emerges. Everyone in that tiny room turn to her with curiosity. Her emotion now was unstable, she’s nervous and embarrass for no reason.
A grown up guy walk toward her with a smile giving a warm greeting. Suddenly music has played, everyone in the room including the girl move in spirit as if it is their instinct. For somehow a girl seems to shine the most, she gets everyone attention. A grown up guy walk toward her once again saying little words softly as if whispering, somehow it made a girl smile.
Now, a girl was moving away far from that building. All eyes in the building stare at her till she vanishes away from their sight.

Something I faced in the Hospital
While I was waiting for a saline solution, I saw different kids were getting in and out. The nurse told me that most of the kids were infected flu, so did I. “Natnicha,” now it was my turn to get inside the room that I noticed most of the crying and screaming sounds came from. I was a little nervous. Then it seemed like I knew the reason why kids were crying because after I’ve got in, the nurse told me to lie down so then she injected me with a needle of a saline solution, it was hurt. When the saline started running in to my vein, it was like a snake was slowly creeping into my body through my left arm. Then I was sent to my room.
In the small boring room, I coughed hardly and I really sore throat as if there was a needle pricked my throat. Also, I mostly got headache all the time like my head was then under construction. Then the nurse came with something I thought rather make me worse than better, my medicines. Seeing tons medicines I should take made me exhausted. Yes I hate taking those medicines. After I had my meal, I took medicines and slept. I woke up again for another meal and I had to repeat everything again. It had been a cycle for four days, the most boring week I have in my whole life.

Why don't we have to use grammar rules when writing short stories
The short story, No Speak English, by Sandra Cisneros is about a hard working man who has just brought his mother “Mamacita” and her baby son to live with him. Instead of fitting in Mamacita stays inside her house all day because she is homesick for her country, language and her old house. It’s not necessarily true that we don’t have to follow grammar rules when writing short stories. However, incorrect grammar can be use as a technique by the author for the development of characters and plot. This essay will explore how the technique is use in creating various aspects in this short story.
Since the story focuses on characters that are immigrants from non-English speaking cultures, the use of incorrect grammar helps build up these characters. It allows us to know more about Mamacita as a character and her Spanish roots.
“No speak English, she says to the child who is singing in the language that sounds like tin. No speak English, no speak English, and bubbles into tears. No, no, no as if she can’t believe her ears”. Her limited knowledge of the English shows her connection with her country and how she refuses to adapt into the new society that she is living in now.
The author also uses the technique of incorrect grammar to develop the narrative through the narrator’s point of view. The choice of words that the author selected suggests that the narrator is probably a kid. “My father says when he came to this country, he ate hamandeggs for three months. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hamandeggs. That was the only word he knew.” By writing hamandeggs, the author is giving us a child-like sense.
By not sticking to the rules of grammar, the author allows the narrator to construct characteristics of his/her own. This is achieved through methods such as, run-on sentences and different uses of punctuations. “Home. Home. Home is a house in a photograph, a pink house, pink as hollyhocks with lots of startled light.” The repetition of the word “home” and “pink” gives the image of the pink house in the reader’s mind.
A short story is often a form of creative writing, it is a process of creating art through literature. Nowadays, people tend to care less about grammar when they’re writing stories. This is to allow the author’s creative process of thinking to work effectively. As mentioned above, not following grammar rules help emphasize the story’s theme of the resistance that other people can have on English culture.
